Abstract

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is well known to all healthcare providers and everyone who has visited any healthcare facility. The need to protect the personal and medical information of patients is the primary reason for the enactment of HIPAA in 1996. HIPAA is very complex, making compliance difficult. Additionally, patient comanagement and communication among a variety of facilities including labs, specialists, diagnostic and imaging centers, among many others, have further complicated compliance across the spectrum of patient care. Companies that facilitate secure communication and assistance with HIPAA compliance provide protection for covered entities and the patient as well.

1. Describe the basic HIPAA regulations
