Smoking and nicotine use have evolved dramatically, yet misconceptions remain widespread, even among healthcare professionals. This course explores the modern science of nicotine addiction, addiction medicine, and the rapidly changing landscape of tobacco and nicotine products. Participants will examine how tobacco affects nearly every organ system, separate fact from fiction surrounding nicotine and combustion, and discover practical, evidence-based strategies to help patients move toward tobacco cessation. By understanding the biology behind addiction, dental professionals can approach these conversations with greater confidence, compassion, and clinical impact.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate between combustible tobacco, smokeless tobacco, electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), heated tobacco products, nicotine-only products, and cannabis products, and describe their associated health risks.
- Explain the biologic effects of nicotine and tobacco use, including the mechanisms of addiction science and the systemic health consequences associated with tobacco use.
- Recognize the impact of tobacco use on multiple organ systems and dispel common misconceptions regarding nicotine, combustion, and smoking-related disease.
- Apply the evidence-based 5 A’s framework (Ask, Assess, Advise, Assist, Arrange) to incorporate brief tobacco and nicotine cessation interventions into routine dental practice.
