For decades we’ve been telling patients to floss, but if that message were really working, would nearly half of adults still be living with some form of gum disease? “Flossing Isn’t the Answer: Rethinking What Successful Home Care Really Looks Like” takes a candid look at the disconnect between what we recommend and what patients actually do, from inconsistent flossing and improper technique to the consequences of inadequate interproximal care. It’s time to explore realistic options that help patients clean where their toothbrush simply can’t reach. We’ll also uncover how chlorine dioxide and micronetting technology may provide another layer of support when mechanical home care alone isn’t getting the job done.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Examine current trends in flossing habits and patient compliance, including the prevalence of inconsistent, ineffective, and improper flossing techniques.
- Describe the oral health consequences of inadequate interproximal plaque and biofilm control, including its impact on gingival and periodontal health.
- Identify alternatives and adjuncts to traditional string floss that can help patients improve interproximal cleaning based on their individual needs, abilities, and likelihood of compliance.
- Explain the role of chlorine dioxide in oral care, including its mechanism of action and potential applications for managing oral bacteria, biofilm, and volatile sulfur compounds.
- Explore micronetting technology and its application in oral hygiene, including how it may enhance the delivery and effectiveness of active ingredients in areas that are difficult for patients to mechanically clean.
