What if creating a more sustainable dental practice isn’t about doing more, but about making better choices with what we already do?

Dental care depends on systems designed to protect patients, support efficiency, and deliver predictable outcomes. Yet those same systems can generate significant waste, consume resources, and reinforce habits that may no longer reflect the technologies, materials, and evidence available today.

The Sustainable Operatory explores how dental professionals can critically evaluate everyday clinical workflows through the dual lens of patient safety and environmental responsibility. Participants will examine opportunities to reduce unnecessary waste, rethink resource use, and make more intentional clinical and purchasing decisions without compromising infection prevention, efficiency, or quality of care. Sustainability does not require perfection or an entirely new operatory. It begins by questioning the status quo and recognizing where smarter choices can create meaningful change.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Examine the environmental impact of common dental workflows and identify opportunities for more sustainable clinical practice.
  • Evaluate products, processes, and resource use through the combined lens of sustainability, patient safety, and clinical performance.
  • Apply practical strategies to reduce waste and resource consumption while maintaining infection prevention and quality of care.

About the Presenter

Brittany Cox

Brittany Cox, MA, RDH, is a dental hygienist, educator, writer, and speaker focused on advancing prevention-first, evidence-based oral healthcare. With more than a decade of clinical dental hygiene experience and a master’s degree in Oral Health Promotion, Brittany’s work explores how earlier intervention, individualized risk assessment, behavior change, and sustainable clinical systems can improve both patient and population health outcomes.

Her clinical and educational work bridges periodontal and caries prevention, oral-systemic health, minimally invasive care, sustainability, and the evolving role of the dental hygienist. She is an active leader within organized dental hygiene and contributes to professional education through continuing education programs, publications, advocacy, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Brittany is particularly passionate about translating emerging evidence into practical strategies clinicians can implement chairside. Through her education, she challenges dental professionals to move beyond reactive disease management and reconsider what is possible when prevention becomes the foundation of modern dental care.
