Interest in myofunctional therapy by sleep experts is compelling dental healthcare professionals to revisit the evaluation of myofunctional disorders. Many dental offices pay little attention to orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) and the role they play in airway, dentofacial growth and development and overall health. Professional dental programs that once required clinicians to recognize and treat OMDs have been abandoned. Resurgence in the identification and treatment of these disorders by sleep experts are encouraging the re-education of dental professionals in assessment and treatment of myofunctional disorders.
