UOR 2014 Dental hygienists can administer some type of local anesthesia in forty-five states. Techniques for maxillary and mandibular anesthesia are well taught and studies show dental hygienists administer local anesthesia as safe and effective as any dentist. But, when local anesthesia is not effective, do you know why? Do you know how you can maximize the effectiveness of any intraoral injection administered? Factors such as genetics, hair color, age and alcoholism all play a role in the effectiveness of local anesthesia. Ways to reduce patient anxiety and pain such as aromatherapy, needle gauge, and numbing the injection site will be discussed from an evidence-based perspective. This course will assist the practitioner to successfully anesthetize patients and provide pain free treatment.
