RDH UOR 2013 Dental hygienists play a key role in caring for people with all types of cancer. Oral health issues can often go untreated during cancer therapy. Side effects, particularly oral mucositis, are associated with severe pain and infections that can delay treatment and significantly impact the patient’s quality of life. As a 33 year old mother with oral cancer, Eva Grayzel endured a free flap reconstruction of the tongue and a modified radical neck dissection, followed by a maximum dose of radiation therapy. Hear Eva’s compelling story of the physical as well as emotional challenges she has faced during her cancer journey, paired with a dental hygienist’s approach for providing comprehensive oral care and support for patients with cancer.
