Oral health care is all about the relationships that we form with patients, and we create those relationships through effective use of communication. Much research about communication assesses clinician and researcher points of view. However, patient knowledge, experiences, and opinions are also part of the evidence base, so what about them? What do patients want? The answers can help us blend what they want with what they need, so they are more likely to follow our recommendations and reach higher levels of health. This interactive program highlights research on communication issues from the patient’s point of view, including oral health literacy, aspects of nonverbal communication, and classic and new ideas about influence and persuasion.
