UOR 2014 Oral Pathology is considered “scary” coursework during school. This course is designed to demystify the basic concepts that were so overwhelming in dental hygiene school and to connect them to everyday practice scenarios. Foundational concepts such as the inflammatory response, cardinal signs, and biochemical mediators will be reviewed, increasing practitioner confidence and understanding of inflammation and repair. What do the basics of inflammation and repair have to do with patient treatment today? Case studies will be interspersed to connect the foundational concepts to today’s issues in oral infection. Anti-inflammatory medications will be reviewed and related to patient cases. The course will include communication techniques for explaining the impact of inflammatory diseases and increasing patient treatment acceptance.
