RDH UOR 2013 The effectiveness of gloves as a barrier to diseases is an important requirement for dental care and healthcare professionals. Different glove materials show differences in barrier effectiveness. This course reviews results of comparative studies by researchers in U.S. on the barrier effectiveness of gloves currently available. In addition, the dramatic reductions of latex protein allergy in workplaces through the use of the new generation of low-protein latex gloves, as reported by hospital studies in the U.S., Canada and Europe, are also discussed. The use of gloves with inferior barrier properties should be avoided, as it could expose both the dental care professionals and their patients to undesirable health risk
