After spending time observing medical colleagues, it is apparent that their approach to chronic care management is very different from ours as dental professionals. We are taught to “treat” dental disease, rather than manage and prevent progression. We can learn a lot from the medical approach and how education, self-management, and motivational techniques can improve our patients’ outcomes. But, in order to do this well, we need to rethink the dental systems in place that focus on surgical intervention and only reimburse on a procedural.
