Date & Time: Thursday, July 20, 2023, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Speaker: Lora Hooper, RDH; Gina Pritchard, DNP, RN, CNS, ACNP-BC; Anne Rice, RDH, BS, FAAOSH, CDP

Learning Objectives:

  • Exactly how does the mouth put the entire body at risk?  In this presentation, you will learn the How? What? Where? Why? of the dangers that lurk in the oral cavity.
  • You will understand, better than ever before, the multiple factors that impact the health of the mouth and subsequently the rest of the body.
  •  You will learn more about the role of the nasal cavity, breathing, and of gastro-intestinal health or “gut” health from tongue to tail as these pertain to the dangerous mouth in a bi-directional manner.
  • You will understand the pathophysiology of the subsequent “downstream” effect on the blood vessels, heart, brain, kidneys and every other organ (in fact cell) in the body.
  • Learn more about the red complex periodontal pathogens and what influences them and what they subsequently influence.
  • Get to know the five high risk pathogens and the complexity of these bacteria that are the root of periodontal disease.
  • Understand where they go, how they get there, what they do, and how we most effectively treat them?

With over 80% of American adults over age 35 having some form of gum disease, 50% of heart attacks and strokes being triggered by oral pathogens, a 7-fold increase in adverse pregnancy outcomes, and the relationship between pathogens and a 70% increase rate for Alzheimer’s we are in the driver’s seat for improving and saving lives.  “Oral systemic health” is a buzz worthy phrase that conjures up confusion and may challenge us. As oral medicine professionals we must understand the science, physiology and pathophysiology of the connection between the mouth and the rest of the body.
