Oral disease remains the most common chronic condition in children and the most widespread disease worldwide. If traditional advice—brush, floss, and rinse—were enough, the statistics would look very different. Clearly, it’s time to re-examine what we teach and recommend.

This course uncovers the most persistent myths in oral care and replaces them with the latest science. Participants will learn why common products, such as toothpastes made with peppermint oil, flosses coated with “forever chemicals,” or antiseptic mouth rinses that “kill 99% of germs,” may not be as harmless as they seem. We will explore how micro- and nano-hydroxyapatite compare with fluoride in enamel repair, the different roles of prebiotics and probiotics in nurturing the microbiome, and why daily antiseptic rinsing can have unintended consequences. And we’ll move well beyond the familiar fluoride versus non-fluoride debate to examine the bigger picture of what truly supports lifelong oral health.

With practical takeaways and evidence-based insights, this lecture equips hygienists to challenge outdated assumptions, elevate their recommendations, and strengthen their role as trusted leaders in preventive health.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize where traditional oral care guidance falls short in addressing today’s disease burden.
  2. Compare fluoride with emerging remineralization technologies such as micro- and nano-hydroxyapatite.
  3. Differentiate between prebiotics, probiotics, and antiseptics, and describe their impact on the oral microbiome.
  4. Assess common oral care products—including toothpastes, flosses, and mouthwashes—for both benefits and risks.
  5. Explain how antiseptic rinses that eliminate broad populations of microbes may disrupt oral and systemic balance.
  6. Apply updated evidence to provide oral care product recommendations that are both safer and more effective for patients.
