UOR 2014 Malocclusion is highly prevalent and often underdiagnosed. This course incorporates the 2011 AAP guidelines highlighting the pivotal role of the hygienist to identify malocclusion and provides patient friendly protocols to discuss the subsequent consequences malocclusion imposes: occlusal wear, abfractions, incipient decay, and periodontal disease. Patients trust hygienists as their “health care advocates” and will seek their guidance regarding orthodontic options. Adult orthodontics has become a “hot topic” due to the scientific advances in clear “braceless” orthodontics, the increased awareness of the perio-ortho connection, and extensive media coverage. The participant will be able to help patients identify orthodontics as an integral component to comprehensive care, not just aesthetics. Impressive before and after perio-ortho case studies will be presented.
